Lolita by Ron Arad for SWAROVSKI CRYSTAL PALACE is exhibited at MoMA in New York
The Museum of Modern Art presents Ron Arad: No Discipline, the first major U.S. retrospective of Arad’s work, from August 2 to October 19, 2009 in New York.
Since its first show in Milan in April 2004, Lolita by Ron Arad for Swarovski Crystal Palace has travelled the world and has been shown at the Venice Architecture Biennale, Tokyo design week, in Osaka, Shanghai, Dubai, Istanbul, Munich, Paris, London and Miami.
Lolita is a classic chandelier shape created with 2,100 Swarovski crystals in an omni-directional spiral. Pushing the boundaries of technology, Lolita uses a crystal pixel ribbon, white LEDs, and 31 processes to create a truly interactive design. The pixel ribbon enables the display of text messages sent to the Lolita’s mobile phone number. Visitors can send texts to (917) 774-6264. The messages appear at the top of the chandelier and slowly wind down the ribbon’s curves, creating the impression that the chandelier is spinning ever so slightly.
Nadja Swarovski, Vice President of International Communications, Swarovski comments, ‘Swarovski is honoured to be a part of the retrospective exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art which is such a unique cultural institution. We are thrilled to have collaborated with Ron Arad on this visionary design which showcases the creative use of Swarovski crystal within art and cutting edge technology.’
