Giles - Paris Spring/Summer 2010
In his inaugural Paris show for SS10, London-based Giles presented a collection of young-in-spirit and attainable womenswear. Inspiration was a playful cross between Scooby-Doo and the natural world, and metallic, neon and soft-toned prom-dresses were teamed with fun accessories that ranged from gold plated bulldog clips and Scooby-do bags to scorpions and spiders hand-made with Crystallized Swarovski Elements. There is a confidence in his collaboration with Swarovski that comes from working with the company for 12 seasons. ‘It’s a different way of using crystal,’ he says of his work for next season, explaining that Swarovski crystals are not traditional adornment and why some are concealed beneath transparent tulle: ‘I wanted Swarovski crystal to be a little more hidden this season.’ In fact, the 39 year old designer’s ‘take’ on Swarovski’s crystal animals are a delicious triumph of craft and wit. Deacon was influenced by the television documentary charting the recent discovery of 56 new species of animals in the Bosavi crater in Papua New Guinea. ‘It gave me a lot of food for thought’ said Giles, who played not only with nature but the jokier elements of Surrealism in his larger-than-life insects made from around 5000 2mm – 8 mm beads. ‘Two days work went into each one,’ he says proudly.
