Mark Fast - London Spring/Summer 2010
Knitwear designer Mark Fast is working with Swarovski for the first time in this, the 28 year old Canadian’s third collection shown at London Fashion Week. His inspiration is an ancient Egyptian goddess who escapes from home carrying her most precious possessions packed into knitted tubes; an Egyptian ‘goddess’ channelled via silent film stars Theda Bara and Gloria Swanson, draped in hundreds of pearls in designs by Natacha Rambova and Paul Iribe. Fast’s ‘tubes’ have more sobriety, knitted in a stretch yarn and filled with pearls and CRYSTALLIZED™ – Swarovski Elements in Aurora Borealis, giving off a subdued and subtle glow, draped around the body in four looks and across shoes by Christian Louboutin. The tubes swing with the weight of crystals; forming what Fast calls a ‘crystal fringe’. The idea, says Fast, is entrapment: those tubes are miniature dresses holding thousands of stones in navy, black, dove grey and fuchsia. Using the medium of knit, Fast believes his work evolves ‘organically’ because of the freedom allowed by the process. ‘This season is more intricate, there are more textures, more volume; and more movement.’
