Holly Fulton - London Spring/Summer 2010
Holly Fulton found her inspiration for the S/S 10 collection, her second working with Swarovski, by looking at a catalogue for the opening of the Empire State Building in 1931. Art Deco is a leitmotif in her work as a fashion and jewellery designer. Fulton also references the work of fellow Scot, the late Sir Eduardo Paolozzi. This season, it’s his famous 1965 painting ‘Wittgenstein in New York; two men in profile, the New York skyscape behind them. ‘I love the symmetry possible with using CRYSTALLIZED™ – Swarovski Elements and the colour possible with the crystals,’ says Fulton, who last season demonstrated the graphic possibilities of crystal with an assured hand. Again she has used hot fix, but with large stones in rectangular, triangular and square shapes and vibrant colours, and upped the ante on crystal in jewellery and accessories. ‘This season there is a surreal mixture, abstracting architectural details and heads, but there is a sense to the patterns that have gone to make 17 pieces for this collection.’ Plastic and crystal neckpieces, earrings, bangles, and printed clutches, with strong and confident colours made crystal a cornerstone of this exciting collection which appeals both in its singularity and Fulton’s confident skill with accessories.
