Antonio Berardi - London Spring/Summer 2010
This season, on his return to London Fashion Week, Antonio Berardi has taken a state of feminine undress as a starting point and counterbalanced the ‘girlyness’ of that by introducing Samurai armour. ‘I saw an exhibition of this in Milan and was struck by how certain parts of the body were covered and the way armour was put together,’ he says with enthusiasm. ‘This is translated into shading, and I have used CRYSTALLIZED™– Swarovski Elements in jet and clear on fabrics to create this.’ Berardi first worked with Swarovski in 1995 and he says crystal lends itself to his aesthetic; it’s not just there to skim the surface of fabric. ‘We wanted to use it in a way that was fresh and new,’ continues the designer. ‘There is a sense of geometry, with stones embroidered on top on each other to create a patter of multi-facets and volume. Transparent crin in a flesh-tone is embroidered with crystals in a reference to Marlene Dietrich’s ‘nude’ crystal & sequin encrusted dresses by designer Jean Louis. ‘I always us crystal,’ he says simply, because I love the challenge of it.’
